The alarm system I am looking at has 2 relay outputs and can control 10 beams.But what do the outputs do?

I can't imagine why such a big gauge wire for a 15 amp circuit. A wire that big is good to 40 amps. I suppose that some whacko code might require nm8 (it is high temp wire) for hard wired smoke detectors. Electrically, I see no reason to no use nm 14-3
