why are they called radial tyres
As far as I know all tyres are now radial tyres. Radial tyres can be tubeless or have an innertube, but tyre technology has advanced to a point that you don't need an innertube any more.
A radial tire is a tyre which has been reinforced with cords of steel or strong textile materials. This is not however to be confused to with bias-ply tires. I'll explain the difference later. If tyres were made with just rubber, they would be too soft and flexible, hence reinforcement is required. Radial tyres were invented by Michelin in 1946, but due to their advantages, they are now the dominate design in automotive tyres. Difference in radial tyres and bias-ply tires is that the reinforcement cords in radial tyres are set up at 90 degrees, while bias-ply tires have cords at 45 degrees. The 90 degree set up provides better fuel economy by lowering the rolling resistance and durability of the tire.

In the old days tires were "Bias Ply". That means the cords in the rubber ran around the tire. Radial ply means the cords that are closest to the pavement run the radius of the tire. Radial tires roll easier and grip better in hard turns. Much better than the old tires.
There are two types of TIRES.The first is called Bias ply tires,the other is radial.Bias ply are wht they used to put on cars in the 50's..Radial tires are what most cars used today..Radial tires are called that because of the way the tread wraps around the edge of the tire.Radial tires make your car turn better at higher speeds,and give you a smoother ride..If you car was designed to have radial tires and you put Bias py on them, it will not handle as good and could cause an accident.
