I have a 99 vw jetta.and the lifters are tapping.not bad.just looking for a cheap alternative.
You can first try the Valvoline MaxLife oil the next time you change the oil and if that doesn't help, then you can try some STP or Lucas oil additive. This slightly thickens the oil and makes it stickier. Or you can bump up to a 10w40 oil and see if that helps. I ran 10w40 oil for many years in my older model cars and never had a problem even in the dead of winter. I used to use 20w50 in my VW GTI when traveling cross country, 900 miles in a day, and that cut down on the oil consumption. Good Luck!
Rather then spending money on additives why not just use a good oil like Amsoil or Schaeffer oil. I myself use Schaeffer oil. Amsoil is also a top of the line oil but I hate paying for a pyramid scheme.
There are no miracle fluids you can add to your car to fix it, any additive that advertises they will fix a leak, noise, or malfunction is false. It may quiet down your valve noise but it wont really help it in any way, and using heavier weight oil will essentially do the same thing. My advice: Don't waste your energy and money on additives, get it repaired properly. Speaking from experience.
