Easiest way to get more heat from your woodburning fireplace is to replace the log grate with one made with hollow tubes. The tubes are open on the lower end (which faces the room) and the tubes bend behind and above the logs, then point at the room also. The upper ends of the tubes have restrictors like caps on the ends with smaller holes, so the warmed air comes out with more velocity, thus it goes into the room not up the chimney. Just take out the iron grate, replace it with the tube grate, and make a fire. Get it at a fireplace store if you can't find it at home improvement center. Always have a co2 detector in a room with woodburning fireplace.
