Question:

what is the difference between a differential and axle?

what is the difference between a differential and axle?

Answer:

The differential is what is between the two axle shafts.
One positve traction other aint ( spins two and other spins one wheel)
The differential is the gearset that transfers the power from the driveshaft to the axle shafts. The axle shafts are part of the axle assemble, as is the differential. The axle would include everything between the brake drums/rotors. An axle does not have to be driven, however. Trailer axles have no differential, nor do most front axles, although you will not see a solid front axle on anything manufactured today, as independent suspension provides a much better ride.
