Question:

What is the life of a CV axle in miles/km, also does this situation sound strange or quite normal?

I bought my car 2 months ago, dealer changed the oil (used wrx), and since then I had it changed again at one of those quick oil change places (thinking of never going to one again) and nothing was said at that time about any CV axle (111k mi), and now I take it in and have oil changed at 116k (and the place that changed it this time found tires wearing unevenly even after having a Big O balance and rotate them and check the air pressure which was at 32. Now this quick lube type place tells me they‘re at 37 and 39 and I haven‘t done any inflation. ) They also told me that their was no oil on the stick after 5k mi. with some kind of synthetic that was used at the previous oil change shoppe which I witnessed the people checking several times, and it was full. Does this sound really strange? This place also quoted me a price of $140 per CV shaft when I can find them for $60 a piece.

Answer:

well, for the CV axles, they usually need replacement often. I had to change mine like 5-6 times in my 368k mile civic. I just bought one with lifetime warranty a couple years ago and each time one needs replacement, i just trade in the old one and they give me a new one free of charge. Maybe the quick lube place drained it, or you may be burning oil. Or you have a leak that only happens at high speeds.
your asking how long a cv axle last? it just depends how you drive.they won,t last too long if you start out on a bind like in a turn from a dead stop because that puts pressure against the joints.
