Thief ants and other ants make nests where ever they happen to be. Fire ants do that to. They are kind of like a coo coo bird. They will use other birds nests.
I never played Safety in high school, I was a Defensive End. But i recommend you get gloves. As far as socks go, our coaches didn't care but I would wear short socks. I think you will do fine as long as you listen to the coaches and stay focused. Have fun out there. Don't be afraid to ask the other guys that have more experience.
it is probably an ant called an Odorous House Ants.they do not nest in the ground like other antsI have found them between layers of towels in the cabinetsin coffee machines..in electrical outlets..etc. They are like little nomads, one day living inside the home, two days later in the leaf debris of the gutters
