Question:

What is the purpose of the Shock and Spring in the suspension system of a car?

I have auto tech test in a few days on the suspension system of cars and I am confused about the difference between the shock absorber and the spring, and the function of each.

Answer:

The shock keeps the vehicle from bouncing up and down and the spring supports the weight of the vehicle over bumps. if you can't figure this out don't even try to be a mechanic.you don't have the mechanical aptitude.
The spring suspends the body of the car and absorbs bumps in the road. The shock absorbers simply dampen the springs and keep them from bouncing after going over a bump. The thing to remember is that the springs hold the car up, not the shocks. The shocks stop the car from bouncing. If you wanted to raise or lower the car you would use different springs, different shocks will not raise or lower the car.
No need to worry. If you're too stupid to tell the difference between a shock absorber and a spring, you're never going to pass the test anyway.
