Question:

What parts do I need to replace my cars OE suspension system?

I own a 2004 Toyota RAV 4 4-wheel drive. The suspension system is the original factory installed. I want to replace the whole system with new shocks and struts ++, and I need help on the parts I will need to order (mail order online from the U.S. since I live in a foreign country). So far I‘ve looked at strut assemblies (front left/right); shocks (rear left/right); shock bushings; stabilizer bar link (rear left/right); strut mounts (front left/right); and sway bar link (rear left/right and front). Am I on the right track?

Answer:

Rarely do I modify a suspension system unless I am not happy with it. What is your goal? How does it ride/handle now and what are you changing? Is the original suspension wore out? Are you looking at stock (OEM type) replacements or are you altering the suspension, like beefier (larger diameter) anti-sway bars? Another common modification is to replace OEM (rubber) bushings with neoprene bushings. I just bought a 1980 Triumph convertible TR7. It came new with soft front springs, not good for a sports car. So, I just ordered off Ebay a set of much firmer springs that I can adjust the ride height to suit myself. I will also replace the front strut inserts (most cars don't have inserts) with a firmer shock. If you just want to restore your suspension to like new condition, you are on the right track. If you want to change the handling characteristics, then you need to plan it out carefully as to what your goals are.
