I‘ve got a 87 mustang with a big engine in it . just got the car and before I start changing things i‘d like to know the strength and details of the rear end thats under it. It‘s a stock 4 cylinder car, has a manual 5 speed trans in it that looks stock. Unsure if the tranny has been changed to anything stronger or if it‘s same one from stock car. It‘s a four lug car and I really wanna know what size the rear axle is (like an 8.8 or a ford 9 inch), and what gear ratio it could be. Also, is there a website that has this info detailed? I‘ve just had a number of people give me different guess answers. Thanks
its an 8.8 with 3.73 gears.
the 4 cylinders all had 7.5's and most with 3.27 code 5. You can find the axle code on the tag that is mounted directly on the axle housing. Another opt is a white sticker located in the doorjamb there is either a number or letter under axle. Conventional or open rear ends break down as follows: 8-2.73, Y-3.08, 5-3.27, F-3.45, 6-3.73. Locking or Traction Lok break down as follows M-2.73, Z-3.08, E-3.27, R-3.45, W-3.73.
