Hello Sarah: The homes don't burn any faster than stick built structures. Make sure you have smoke (fire) detectors in each bedroom, the kitchen, and furnace area. Check the operation monthly and change the batteries every year when you set your clocks back.
Some detectors are hard wired and only use the battery as a back up should the electricity go out. Call your local fire dept for advice. It may need your electrician.
You have two options, live without them (destroying them with a bat while they beep is fun), or take them to Lowe's or check the manual to see why the system is malfunctioning.
