I am making a craft project. I went to a craft store and purchased a yard of plastic in the fabric dept. I cut two 6X6 pieces and glued them with a water resistant glue. I allowed 24hrs. I then put water inside and a few hrs later noticed it was soaking through the plastic and leaking. I need a glue that will hold water inside. I hope this clarifies my question.
Water resistant normally does not include immersion. It depends on the plastic. And fabric department through the plastic bother me - is the plastic itself water tight? If you make a bag of a square by holding up the 4 corners and pouring water in the sag, does water drip through? As a starting point, I would suggest looking on the packaging for E6000 and GOOP products (from the same company) and see whether they are okay for immersion in water. I use them outside, but don't recall. You may have to fold the seam and apply the glue to hold the seam so the water only touches the glue at a thin line. Aquarium silicone glue should work, but it won't stick to some plastics. I am not sure acrylic sheet comes as thin as you want and PVC has to be opaque, I believe, but both use a solvent cement that partially melts the plastic then evaporates. If the plastic is thermoplastic - it melts when heated - then you can seal the seams with an iron. Check a small piece of the plastic over a match or kitchen burner - the difference between melting and burning should be obvious.
The glue you used most likely hadn't dried completely. When you put two pieces of plastic together, place some of the glue on both pieces and let them set up and become tacky, then put them together. Take some clothes pins and put them around the edges on the glued parts to press the pieces together. You will need to wait at least 48 hours drying time, as air can not get to the glue using plastic and it takes longer than the label says.
For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axp3t Not knowing what type of plastic it is, the only two glues that may work are; Superglue; if it doesn't work, then try; PVC plumbers glue. Both can be purchased at a Big Box home Improvement Store for cheapest prices, or your local hardware store. Vapors from the PVC glue are flammable and toxic, so use in a well ventilated area only. I have the same problem. I have tried melting some of the plastic and pressing it between the sheets. This only seemed to melts the sheets also. I have used Gorrilla Glue, Silicone, Super Glue and Epoxy and have had no luck. Double sided tap sorta worked but it takes a ton of it. So far the best thing I have found is just using Duct tape. It's ugly and falls off in the heat of the summer but does work temporarily. I will definitely buy an iron and try that. That seems like the best idea yet. I did visit an adhessive manufacturers website and they say there is nothing invented yet that bonds sheeting together permanently. I find this hard to believe. I have used a vacumme sealer for freezer bags and it works wonderfully on really thin plastic but the thicker sheeting I need and it has no affect on that.
