Question:

What's with these "press one or press two" voicemail messages I've been getting?

Almost every day I'm getting these messages from various organizations asking me to press one if I want the message to continue or press two if I'm not interested. Is this some kind of scam? And yes, I'm on the Do Not Call list.

Answer:

I don't get many of those anymore. I press 2 and hold it there. The sound that goes to the person who eventually answers is not conducive to a solicitation.
I hate these things when you call a public utility or a governmental agency. Then you have to listen to all the sappy music and those recorded voices thanking you for your patience! I usually press 0 and sometimes get a live person. Its six of one and half-dozen of the other, though.
On your home phone or your cell phone? I have not gotten any of these. I hope someone can help you. This may be an automated systems way of getting around the do not call list, just venturing a guess here. Good luck on finding an answer. It must be very aggravating. I'm on the no call list as well on our home phone. I called a number the other day to get on a cell phone no call list, and I have no idea what I got, but it wasn't that. Gosh I hope it wasn't one of those X rated numbers, I hung up as soon as the automated system answered and it wasn't anything to do with a no call list. I do know it was an 888 area code, so I'm not sure now. Good grief!
I have had a few of these calls. I suspect it is a scam and I am certainly not going to take a chance on it. A while back there was a scam going round where you had to press '9' on your phone and you were then charged a premium rate to receive the message. I hang up on all unsolicited calls with no exception. Occasionally I put the phone down and leave the automated message to run it's course in the hope that I am running up someones phone bill.
It's just automated cold calling. They're trying to find out which phone numbers they can get a response, any response, from. If you press 1 it means there's a person there, but if you press 2 it means there's a person there. It's sort of like those spam emails that say press this button if you don't want to receive future emails from us and you press that button and you still get emails from them because now they know it's a working email address. If you get to listen to the voicemail message they leave, they NEVER mention their name or the name of the company they are selling for, no phone number to call them back with so it is almost impossible to track these folks down (including the police) so even being on the Do Not Call list doesn't make any difference. If you can, ignore them completely, don't press anything, let them spend their money never connecting with anyone (well, I guess if you have a cell you do pay for incoming calls so maybe somoene ought to do something about that, but with a landline, you just delete the message and move on, don't respond to them ever. It's spam.
