It depends on the type of exinguishing agent that is inside. Some really old one had carbontetrachloride inside, and are hazardous. If broken, can cause health risks to you and your family. Most newer exinguishers have a dry powder in them, either a ABC, or BC chemical. Either one of these chemicals, while somewhat irritating to the skin, are relatively harmless. The common method for disposal is to discharge the extinguisher into a disposal container(this is only done to relieve pressure so it doesn't go into the garbage truck charged up). Then, once completely emptied of pressure, take the valve out by unscrewing it from the bottle, typically in a counterclockwise direction. Before throwing cylinder in the trash, we are now being told that the cylinder must be destroyed by smashing it, or drilling holes in it. We have our local drug manufacturers to thank for that, who are using some of these in the manufacture of illegal drugs. If you have any doubts what the chemical is, then take it to a local extinguisher company. Most will dispose of for free. If you do not know, email me and I will try to find a company near you. After reading your Additional comments above: If the extinguishers are only two years old, why dispose of them? If they still hold a charge (Needle in green on gauge), then keep them.
