What symptoms come of bad wheel bearings and ball joints?

What are some signs when a wheel bearing and/or ball joints are in need of replacement? For example, does the steering wheel shake a lot? What sort of noises do you hear?What happens if you don't repair/replace these parts over a long period of time?
