Fire hydrants are basically a water valve that is attached to a water main that is part of a water distribution system and is used primarily for fire suppression. There are two types, a dry barrel and wet barrel hydrant. A dry barrel is used in areas where the climate will fall below freezing, 32 degrees Farenheit. The water remains 6 to 8 feet below ground in the water main until the barrel nut is turned on top of the hydrant and water flows up the barrel and out one of the 3 discharges. A wet barrel hydrant is used in areas where the climate doesn't fall below freezing. The water is in the barrel and ready to flow as soon as the barrel nut is turned on. Fire departments attach a 2 1/2 to 5 hose to one of the hydrant discharges and the other end of their hose to the fire truck so they have a constant flow of water to fight fire with. Fire hydrants differ from extinguishers in that hydrants provide a constant flow of water and extinguishers have a limited supply of extinguishment product. Fire hydrants only contain water. Extinguishers may contain water, foam, dry chemical or dry powder. Fire hydrants were originally called fire plugs. Philladelphia, PA had the first water system. The water lines were made of hollowed out logs. Early firefighters would uncover the water lines and drill a hole in the logs and insert their hoses in the hole to get water to fight fire with. When they were done, they would plug the hole with cork. The plug was then available in the event they need to use it again to fight a fire. Hence the term fire plug. Incidently, the first fire hydrants were created and used in Philladelphia, PA as well.
