Question:

what type of hoist is required? Can the engine be supported other then crane?

Want to remove auto transmission from 1994 taurus.

Answer:

i would use a suitable cherry picker ( engine hoist) they work very well.but i would also be pulling both the engine and transmission to improve access to every thing
You need an engine hoist that is balanced to support the weight of an engine and the particular balance points needed to support it.
just a simple floor jack and a little common sence
well my friend cocklespur, you could possibly use a jack under the oil pan but make sure you use a wood block to avoid damaging the oil pan. Alternatively you could use a hand winch from the ceiling, a tree or some type of beam structure that you construct to your specifications, it's your call.
