Here is the deal. A sport bike is designed for one thing, to go around a track very quickly. It is NOT designed for, economy, fuel economy, reliability, ease of maintenance, tire longevity, or for new riders. Period. You are in luck though, If you really want a bike to save money, there are a few options available that are similar to a sport bike. These are call standards, and generally consist of the ninja 250, ninja 500, ninja 650, gs 500, and sv650. These bikes are appropriate choices for newer riders who want to save money. They are generally cheap to insure, reliable, fuel efficient, road worthy, and will not get you into too much trouble when you screw up.and you will. All of these bikes have a similar look to a sport bike, but are actually appropriate for a new rider. At 18, your insurance will be really high, unless you pay cash for the bike and only carry liability. If you were to get a race class sport bike, say a cbr600, your insurance bill would most likely run close to $2500 a year. A ninja 250 would run closer to $400 per year for full coverage. A cbr600 gets 33mpg, a ninja 250 gets 65mpg, Tires for a cbr600 run well over 150 each. Tires for a ninja 250 are around 60 each. Keep in mind you will be replacing tires every 5-8k miles on a cbr600, and closer to 10k on a ninja 250. As for oil, there are many opinions out there. I use Amsoil on all my bikes, and it works well for me. The first thing you need to do is take the MSF course so you are actually legal to ride. Then start shopping for bikes, but do not pull the trigger until you KNOW WHAT YOUR INSURANCE WILL COST. This is often overlooked by new riders and can really bite you in the a$$.
