the top is correct and what is above is right and wrong.what he is describing is a short ram intake.a short ram intake runs the the pipe very short and inside the engine bay and has better throttle response but less power due to warmer air.a cold air intake typically runs into the fender or behind front bumper or below the motor.thus having colder air but better performance due to less restriction and cooler air.stock intakes usually have air boxes and silencers for more restriction to run quieter.but to get the optimum power out of a new intake you need a exaust and a computer tune.but to answer your question you will notice a somewhat deeper sound and a little louder as well.now newer cars like the brand new Mustangs and such come with the optimal intakes.i could go on and on all day about this stuff.
The above poster is wrong because it may make an engine breathe better, 9.9 times out of 10, it is putting hotter air into the engine then the stock intake housing, because if you actually pay attention to modern cars where the placement of the air intake is, it is positioned generally in the best spot for cold, fresh air. All a cold air will straighten out the flow, shorten it, and probably put the intake filter next to the engine, thus putting hotter air into it.
