Question:

What would cause ones car alarm to go off randomly in the middle of the night?

I do have some issues with my neighbors but I do not think they would try to steal my car at midnight. In fact I think everyone around here was in bed until somehow my car alarm started going off like crazy.

Answer:

I don't know why but I live in a large apartment complex and we hear car alarms going off at all hours of the night. It's really annoying. The only thing I can think that would solve the problem at 4am is take a shot gun to the hood of the car! Seriously though, maybe you are better off disabling it. Nobody pays any attention to car alarms anyways. Go buy a Club. Much less annoying to your neighbors and it works great!
I bet its an aftermarket alarm
That's a very common problem with car alarms, so much so that I don't even recommend using any of the after market alarms at all. Most of the factory installed alarms are okay with few malfunctions such as what you're likely experiencing. Many times with after market alarms, the problem is that the sensitivity setting is turned up so that they may be set off by wind, vibration due to a car driving past or even a loud noise. You can try setting the sensitivity to a little less sensitive setting and see if that fixes the problem. After market alarms are so prone to this problem that it's pretty safe to say that most alarms are false alarms which renders them nearly useless in my opinion. A better alternative is to keep your car locked and keep any valuables out of sight in the trunk. If you feel you need more protection, you can also install a separate kill switch that will simply render the car inoperable when switched on. The switch can be mounted in an out of sight location and the best feature of all is that you won't have your neighbors giving you dirty looks or throwing rocks at you because of false alarms.
