I just put new tires on my bike and probably put 200miles on them already. It winter now and I‘m putting it away and want to have them ready for the spring. They still are slick on the edges and I‘ve heard the best way is to ride them but is there a way I. Can speed it up by rubbing something on it?
These are all great answers, but all the years Ive been riding ans customers bikes ive mounted, the method that has never given me any problems was to mount, balance, and ride off into the sunset. I will say that I do hit a gravel road if its not out of my way, but normally, just ride the tire in easy for a short break in period.
The quickest and safest way to scrub the shine off of new tires is to ride a gravel road for a few miles.I've been doing this for years and even use this method on racing tires. It's better than 200 mi on open road and won't effect the tire compound as some chemical cleaners will.
I never have had to store over winter but for fast new tire break-in I cut off all the teats first than reverse spin the wheel while applying #30 grit sandpaper to the tires. I hold the paper all the way down to the margin on the sidewall and spin the tire with a friction cylinder on a drill motor. Bob A's method is great too.
