Progressive metal tends to be more melodic and use much more keyboard/syth in their music. Heavy metal would be bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Judas Priest, etc.
I always thought it was the odd song structure that made something progressive, as in it progresses as it goes, where as regular stuff has a common structure that it follows, and the song doesn't really change that much before the end, for example old Opeth songs almost never repeated the same riff that occurred earlier in the song.

I thought progressive stuff was like with loads of changing tempos and riffs. But i do think that it is stupid that there are loads of different genres of metal e.g deathcore, groove metal etc why isn't it just called heavy ******* metal!!?
actualy hevy metal is the entire genre people just say metal for short progressive metal is just a sub-genre hope this helps
