The 3.43 is indeed the ring and pinion or the ratio of input to output. The differential gears simply allow for equal torque between the rear wheels, they do not in any way effect the ratio. They simply allow one wheel to travel differently from the other as in making a turn, while maintaining equal torque or applied force to each.
Axle gear ratios are obtained by calculating the Ring gear count, and dividing the Pinion gear count. Example: Ring gear tooth count, 41 teeth. Pinion tooth count, 11 teeth now divide the pinion tooth count into the ring gear tooth count, and you will get the figure of 3.727272, which equals 3.73:1 ratio.
