Question:

When should I replace my front motorcycle tire?

I have a Triumph Street Triple with Continental Sport Attack tires. I have about 8000 miles on them and the rear tire is definitely done, but the front still looks to be in pretty good shape. What‘s the rule of thumb on replacing the front? I‘ve read that you can get up to double the number of miles on a front tire, but that might just be on a cruiser.

Answer:

Just like a car tire, there is a tread gage running across the tread, when the tread wears down to the crossbar repolace it. If you lose confidence in your tires, there's nothing wrong with replacing them, a $200 tire is cheaper than a crash.
I never changed a front tire due to wear until I got this tank of an HD. Previous reasons to change: age, weather-cracking, matching to the new choice of rear tire. If you've got 1/2 tread or more there's no reason to swap it other than if you feel like it.
Tires generaly go 1.5 to 2 times miles than the rear. No need to swap in pairs.
