When soldering, why do you need to tin the soldering iron after use and why do you need to wear safety goggles?
and add two capacitors and you should be fine. this is a through hole part so it is easier to solder for someone inexperienced.
1 AAA battery is approx 1.5 V.2 of these in series would be 3 V already. Do you mean 3 V to 5 V? If so, you'd need an opamp with an 800 ohm and 500 ohm resistorsThis would be Rf/Rin*Vin or 800/500*3v 4.8 V at the output.
A resistor won't do as the current would be variable through it, depending upon the power consumed by the alarm clock at different times, like while sounding the alarm. You need a LM3940 regulator IC. The LM3940 is a 1A low dropout regulator designed to provide 3.3V from a 5V supply. If you need a circuit diagram, just feel free to email me. :)
