What you call automatic or self-winding watches are great. Most if not all Rolex watches are self winding. The down side of them is that they have to be worn on a regular basis to keep them wound or of course they stop. Then you have to reset the time and maybe the date the next time you wear them. There are special boxes you can keep them in that have a mechanisms that slowly rocks the watches to keep them wound. Quartz watches do require batteries being replaced every few years but it's a fairly simple process on most watches. But some of the more expensive waterproof watches have to be sent to an authorized service center for battery replacement or their warranties are voided. I have a very nice self-winding watch my wife gave me, but wear a quartz 99% of the time.
Quartz is garbage? They are soulless junk once the battery wears out A genuine Swiss automatic movement will last for life if serviced. Japanese movements are better than quartz.
