I am looking for vermiculite, do you know any shop that sells it in KL or nearby towns.

If I were you I'd try it. But- in a well ventilated area and maybe with a fire-extinguisher handy ^_^
The mechanism is close to the same. In both cases you get heat generated through the oxidation of iron. The first reaction is: Fe + KCl > FeCl + K+ The vermiculite is different however because it is a mineral which exchanges ions, that is it takes iron into it's crystal and releases potassium. However, I don't believe the heat released in either reaction is significantly different.
