Most all insulation is thermal, your basic fiberglass in homes, is used extensively, they have not found anything better yet, spray foam in open and closed cell is thermal, highly toxic till cured, and your basic newsprint paper is thermal to a limit, but flammableAnything else has very low thermal values, in houses, like bubble, foil, etcDirt and wood are insulators but again, very low values.

If you are inhaling the fumes from the melted plastic, then yes, it is bad for youI tend to put foil over the top when i smoke, just as anyone with common sense wouldbest thing to do, if you are worried about the damage, would be to invest in a glass bong, or make one from an old vase or beer bottleJust find a tutorial on youtube on how to drill through glass
