Question:

Which Attic Insulation?

I'm in dire need of additional insulation in my atticUpstairs is one large bedroom and it is always very hot or very coldThe current insulation is old and not even close to code - live in the kansas city areaThe insulation company recommended to blow in additional insulation on top of what I have and then take out the current insulation on the walls (craw space which is to the exterior) and put up batts or a bib (blown in blanket)The total costs was around $1,000 if I do BATTS insulation on the wallsBIBS (instead of Batts) on the walls was an additional $600Is BIBS worth the extra money? What should I do?

Answer:

Crush a clove of garlic and stir it in.
Bring the block of cream cheese to room temperature mix in a few cloves of mashed garlic.
Put a little powdered garlic into some cream cheese, stir it in with a mixerThis makes a smooth spread, where as garlic cloves would make one with pieces of garlic visible and chewableChoose whichever you need Make my garlic cheese spread: 2 packages of cream cheese, softened[total of 16 ounces] 1 jar of Kraft English cheese spread 1 8 ounce jar of Cheese Whiz 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, couple dashes of onion powdercouple dashes of Worcestershire sauce Put the room temperature cheese in a mixer, sprinkle the spices over itMix until blendedPut it into plastic storage containerKeep it at least overnight, but it improves if kept a couple daysServe as a spread, or roll it into a ball, then in pecansRitz crackers taste the bestMy friends and co-workers all had a fit about this, and I make it every year for myselfAdjust the spices to your own tastesRivers adds more.
make sure you let your cream cheese come to room temperature so you can mix easilyI would roast garlic cloves in oven and then mash the garlic, let cool and mix with cream cheeseRoasted garlic has the best garlic flavorI peel the outside of garlic and then cut about 1/4 inch of the top of bulbPut it in foil and place in muffin panBefore closing foil drizzle olive oil, then close foilOven at 400 degrees for about 30 minutesWhen it's done mash one clove at a time and mix with cream cheese, then tasteDepends on your flavorYou can save whatever garlic you don't use in fridge.
If you can afford it get spray foam instead on the wallsIt generally costs about 4x as much as fiberglass batt insulationIt seals the walls and gives you the best insulationIf you house is drafty, this will eliminate any source of a draft at least on those wallsThe other insulation you are discussing won't BIBS is only worth it if it results in a higher R value, or if it has greater resistance to air movementIf all things are equal, go with the least expensiveI'm not familiar with the product, so I won't comment more than that Just be warned, most installers install BATT insulation wrongA survey of homes built by companies trying to build energy star rated homes found that most installers are taking shortcuts that result in uninsulated spots or improperly installed batts around many obstaclesIt is considered very good if installers cover 98 percent of the space that are hired to doIf 2% of the house isn't insulated that means you have a hole the size of a small window that is blowing in outside temperatureSince spray foam always achieves 100% coverage, this is a good reason to go that direction.
