When the lock is open, on the combination part there should be a little lever you need to flip over to set the combination once set just flip it back to the original position.
Tom is correct. The Dot standard meets the requirements to satisfy the law. The snell is a higher standard for racing. Usually, just the Dot Helmets are cheaper. I ride year round and have two helmets. A 3/4 helmet for warm weather and a full face helmet for winter. Buy the cheapest helmet you can that has the Dot stamp on the back. It is suggested that you replace your helmet every 4th year. However, my 3/4 helmet I bought in 2006. The fabric is beginning to come out. But, it still protects. But, also be aware of the statistics. The Florida DOT did a study on Helmets and found that people that wear full face helmets have a slightly higher accident rate. You get a better field of vision with other helmets and have more time to react to cagers.
