Design of those is pretty straightforward, as they have been around for over 100 years. So your only possibility is to find companies that manufacturer them. Small ones are usually made in China. Large ones that are used in power plants are made by companies like GE and Siemens. Contact them for information on job opportunities. electric drive systems ? do you mean electric motors?
Electrical engineers design and research electrical generators. The specialized of use generators attached to primary power (like diesel engines) to produce power to run electric motors for power and speed control, is also electrical engineers but for completely different companies involved in transportation. And I answer this way because of your mention and confusion of generators with electric drive. If you mean electric drive of things like conveyor belts or electric trains/trolleys then that doesn't involve generators at all, only motors. Still electrical engineers.
