Heinrich Schliemann was the German-Russian explorer who discovered what is now known as the ancient city of Troy, (the same city as the epic poem by Homer, the Iliad). He was an important excavator of Troy and of the ancient Mycenaean sites at Mycenae and Tiryns. Peace.
Heinrich Schliemann was a German archaeologist and excavator of Troy, Mycenae, and Tiryns; he is often considered to be the modern discoverer of prehistoric Greece. In 1873 he uncovered fortifications and the remains of a city of great antiquity, and he discovered a treasure of gold jewelry, which he smuggled out of Turkey. He believed the city he had found was Homeric Troy and identified the treasure as that of Priam. His discoveries and theories, first published in Trojanische Altertümer (1874; “Trojan Antiquity”), were received skeptically by many scholars, but others, including the prime minister of England, William Ewart Gladstone, himself a classical scholar, and a wide public, accepted his identification.
