Hi Paranormal Princess, this is Mike with The Home Depot. There could be a couple of issues. One, the hard wired circuit for the smoke alarm could be defective. Typically with an alarm like this the battery is a backup to the hard wired circuit. If the power goes off, the battery maintains power to the alarm temporarily, until the power is restored. Some alarms will emit a low chirp to notify you that the power is off and a problem exists. This could be a power failure or a defective alarm. Secondly, smoke alarms usually has an effective life of 10 years. If your alarm is more than ten years old replace it with a new one. At that point check the hard wired circuit to make sure it is in good working order. I hope this answers your question Mike, The Home Depot Answer Man
