As a generalisation, we can say that heating loads are resistive as are tungsten fillament lamps, Pf 1 or Unity. Loads with electric motors or transformers in them will be inductive, these include other wound components such as chokes (inductors). these will have a lagging Pf somewhere between 1 and 0, although these are extremes. The capacitive loads are less common although some flourescent lights have a 'leading Pf circuit which include a series capacitor (not parallel). many small electronic devices such as timers, passive infra red detectors and smoke alarms use a 'wattless dropper' circuit, that is a capacitor rather than a resistor to drop the supply voltage to usually 48 volts for the electronics. All of these loads have a leading Pf between 1 and 0, but again these are extremes. In the UK, domestic consumers pay for electricity based on KWh, so the Pf of the load is not relevant to the total cost of electricity, unlike industrial and commercial users who are charged on KVAh, the Pf will have a very significant effect on the electricity charge.
