Why are much better in the off road jeeps wrangler 97-07 better than 95 and older?
hest is right on the money excepti would use stronger wording regarding the downsides to the 4 banger. hard to pass big trucks on the highway for one thing. a person never knows what he/she'll do with a Jeep after they buy it. Jeep modification fever hits and you'll be unprepared to do the mods. I hated mine so much that I pulled it and put in a 360 V8but then again, I'm crazy like that.
The 1997 to 2007, known as the TJ, actually is better for off-roading because there was a change over in the suspension system. The old Jeep CJ's (post WWII civilian models to 1985) and the YJ's (1987 to 1995) used a leaf suspension which makes for the rough ride on the road and much less articulation while traversing those rocks off road. The TJ's (1997 to present) use a new in '97 coil suspension which gives each wheel more freedom from the others and creates a much smoother ride and more articulation. For your other question, yeah, the 4 cylinder is a decent engine for off-roading, depending on your plans for the Jeep. If you plan on lifting it and putting on larger tires, I would suggest the straight 6 motor (4.0L) or the new 3.8 V-6 on the 2007 forward models. This will make it easier to push your larger tires down the road and make for less engine wear.
