I drive a 99 Volkswagen Passat. Yesterday there was a snow storm in Chicago but I still needed to drive a far distance. I scraped the ice from my windshield and removed the ice by my wipers. The first half of my drive the wipers were in the slow position and working fine, but then they started to stick and stop in random places instead of in the down position. I stopped and hit them against the window lightly to get the snow/ice off and then kept driving. They continued to stick in the upward position. Now when I turn them on they work but when I turn them off the go and stay up instead of going down. How can I fix them? I now have to drive with the wipers up which is annoying.
They have spun on the wiper motor. There should be a clip or screw where the arms go onto the motor. Take them off and turn the ignition on, turn the wipers off. Turn ignition off and put the wipers back on the motor splines in the normal down position, re-tighten and you should be ok. You didn't get all the ice off and they spun out of place.
I have a 2004 Chevy Impala and here's it what I did. With the car off turn the key to the on position. Turn the wipers on and when they get close to the normal down position turn the key off, the wipers should be stopped close to the normal down and off position. Turn the key back on and the wipers should go down and stop where they normally do. This worked for me and I hope it works for you.
it's the windshield wiper motor. u have to get a new one and put it in. i had this problem, just got it fixed AGAIN a month ago, but only b/c Auto Zone sold me a used one that's been fixed lol, i got a new part this time though
