Question:

why can't I variably adjust the volume on my Motorola dcx3400m cable box?

I figured out how to control the volume on the cable box using the cable remote; the volume will not go from low to high, however. Only on or off. Any help out there? Thanks!!

Answer:

Cable boxes (like DVD players and VCRs) provide what is called a constant level audio output. The volume is controlled by the TV or a receiver.
Try controling the volume from the TV base, just to make sure that it is not a problem with the tv itself. If it works, then you need a new remote. If it doesn't, it means that your cable box or tv set is defective. It is far more common to have a defective remote. If you manually installed your cable box, then order a new remote online. If you had a cable company (FIOS or CABLEVISON or something) then they should have tested the remote before they left. Just call them and you will get a new one for free, or for a minimal price.
