I thought it must be that the battery needs replaced because it chirps constantly when it needs a new battery but it only chirped 3 times with a minute between each chirp.Why?

It depends on the make and model of your alarm system. Some alarms will make a beeping noise of some kind when you disarm it, some will not. It would also depend on how close your parents are sleeping next to a keypad that may beep when you disarm or arm the keypad.
