The ROM chips on DVD-writers are programmed to recognize some but not necessarily all the different disc manufacturers and their products - sometimes all it takes is upgrading the ROM with new firmware. So manufacturers only recommend a few brands because they've only tested some and not all makes of disc. Check your drive makers sit for firmware upgrades. It's a bit tricky but it can be helpful
