Why do houses in the US not have a lightning rod?

I live in Houston, TX and we have several thunderstorms each month. I am originally from Germany and every house there has a lightning rod and there are rarely any houses that burst into flames when they get hit, thanks to the rod. So, why don't they use them on the houses over here in the States - especially since they don't build the houses like in Europe (there we use concrete and bricks and real shingles made out of stone; over here in Texas they use wood and sheet rock)
