Question:

Why do my windshield wipers keep coming on when I dont want them to?

While driving today, my windshield wipers started coming on all by themselves. I was on the road pretty much all day today, and it happened all the time. This problem is very intermittent. I didn‘t notice any type of pattern with them coming on. They came on while i was at a dead stop, while on the highway, while city driving, etc. Any ideas? The fact that it still happened when the car wasn‘t moving kinda rules out a short in the switch doesn‘t it??? Let me know what you think it might be, and how I might fix it.

Answer:

Mine dont work eather so I took a string and tied it to each wiper blade and ran the string inside the two front windows then when it rains all I do is pull the string back and forth and my wipers work just fine! Total cost of the Fix .2 cents
Look at your wiper switch. There is a position on most between off and on marked 'int' or 'var' or delay which stands for intermittent operation. On some it has several positions which control the timing between intervals and on some there is only one position and an adjustable feature for varying the time between operations.
There are many possibilities since you didn't include what type of vehicle you have. The most common of these happens on later model vehicles. Newer vehicles have computer controlled wiper systems (speed dependent wipers, etc) the switches operate completely opposite from the old design. Therefore, a poor connection in a switch contact on (as opposed to not working at all). It can happen anytime since it is not a short. The switches are now called multifunction switches and encompass the turn signal switch, hazard switch, high beam switch and wipers controls! See your dealer or a trained technician that can easily verify this for you. If you happen to be driving a Ford, this is a very common known problem with the switch but happens on many other models as well. Hope this helps!
