why do people do this with their air cold intakes?
Technically, a cold air intake should take air from OUTSIDE the engine compartment. But it really doesn't make that much difference. CAI's don't really increase HP until you hit the 5,000 RPM range and even then they're questionable. Mostly, they're a total waste of money unless you drive around with your foot on the floor.
