Question:

why does my 2009 chevy malibu have manual transmission settings?

I have an automatic transmission, but on the steering wheel there are manual transmission shifting knobs. I‘ve driven it in manual before, and it works just as any other manual transmission would when it comes to the gears. I‘m just wondering why an automatic transmission would also have the manual settings.

Answer:

sounds to me like your car has a problem and they are trying to fix it out of a bottle so they don't have to pay a repair bill.
Chevrolet calls it a tap shift transmission. An automatic transmission is programmed to select the best gear most of the time, but not always. If you need to accelerate quickly you would want to keep the transmission from upshifting too quickly. If you are getting ready to pass a car on a two lane road it is a good idea to shift down yourself before passing rather than waiting for the transmission to do it for you. In hilly terrain you might want to select a gear to prevent the transmission from hunting for the proper gear. On a slippery road you might want to start in a higher gear to prevent wheel spin. Most people will drive in full auto all of the time but manual gear select is a very useful feature for those who know how to use it.
The Malibu is a family sedan not a sports car. Americans don't like manual transmissions and the percent of sales with them gets lower every year. Last I heard it was over 80% were automatics and most of the rest were sports cars. It costs money to build different versions especially when there is no damand. For a family sedan its probably over 95% automatics. Even the ones that do sell with a manual are such low volume that you probably need to special order it or it only comes with a base engine.
