I have a 94 Dodge Caravan with front wheel drive. The left axle keeps popping out of the transaxle. I originally took it in to a repair shop because the car would shake when accelerating. They found the left drive axle was loose. I told them it had been replaced 5000 miles ago for same problem. They suggested replacing both axles. This fixed the shaking problem. One week later after 150 miles, the left axle pops out. They replace it and the 2nd one pops out after 200 miles. They tried a different manufacturer and this 3rd one lasted 400 miles. Each time I have asked if there is any other component that may be putting stress on the axle joint. They said the only other thing to do is replace the trans-axle. They don‘t do that at this shop, so I think they are being honest but maybe not smart. The trans-axle has 100k miles. The vehicle has 165k miles.Could motor mounts, ball joints, tie rods, alignment, suspension, struts/towers, or anything else cause this?
It sound as if the spring clip on the half shaft has worn off the the ground groove inside the carrior bearing. At this point an independant transmission shop could split the differential to fing the problem. No more Chrysler products for you! It sounds as it it's had a few parts in her day.
They are right. On the ends of your axeles there is a clip called a C-clip. This is what holds the axle into the trans axle. Im sure they tried spreading the c-clip out a little to see if that would work. I would take it to a transmission shop. They may have a way to keep it from coming out. Worse case you would have to replace the trans axle because the lip in which the C-clip sits has been worn out. Another post says motor mounts but dont waste your time. A drive axle has about 6 inches of travel eitherway which is basicly 12 inches.
have the shop realign the motor. the motor mounts on that model caravan have adjustment slots the engine may be a little too far to the right causing the shaft to pop out. its worth a shot. good luck
