Question:

Why heat transfer is important in Mechanical Engineering curiculum?

Why mechanical engineering students need to study heat transfer?

Answer:

ALL mechanical processes result in the production of heat and therefore are affected by heat. Understanding the mechanisms of heat transfer is essential to understanding mechanical design.
Mechanical Engineer can be involved in calculations for and the design of :- Insulation in houses, thickness of insulation required for the lagging of refrigerated pipes, what material to use for brake linings, how much cooling water will be required in an engines cooling system for efficient running, what size condensers will be required to design and fabricate a condenser for a large refrigeration plant, what size boiler tubes to put in a large boiles to transmit enough heat to drive an aircraft carrier at 36 knots. A mechanical Engineer not having any idea on heat transfer would be like having heaps of money but not being able to count.
