News crews do that all the time. Just don't get in the way or violate traffic laws to get the news first. You could find yourself as the news item.
Legal - yes. But what if it was your mother in the accident, and some dou(che filmed it and sold it to the news? I've been a paramedic for 16 years (9 on a helicopter) and cannot tell you how invasive that is. In many cases, it is the most horrible event in someones life, and you are there filming it, just to make a buck. Nice!
