I am doing a chemistry lab on the synthesis of aluminum and I am not sure why we need to heat the filter paper that we will be using for gravity filtration in the oven.Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Its to cook or evaporate off the excess water that was used in filtrationThat shouldn't be part of your weight, so thats why it i vitally important to heat the paper If you don't heat it long enough, you will have a percent yield over 100% because you didn't evaporate all the water.
