Question:

Why is my Coleman propane furnace smoking?

I have a Coleman presidential II furnace and I went to turn it on yesterday and as it started to heat up there was smoke that started coming out of the top of the unit into the house. I was thinking maybe it was just from dust burning off, at least I hope that's it. Any information is helpful

Answer:

Intelligent people clean such things before firing them up. Y'could have started a serious house fire! Watz da matter wit' youse?
Sounds like a busted heat exchanger. The flames dancing all over when the blower kicks on is a sure sign blower air is reaching the combustion air. Another symptom of this is CO2 and smoke entering the house. A sooty, raw smelling burn is another indication as well. Basically it is dangerous to operate as one busted that bad will let high levels of CO into the house.
