Question:

Why was there lead in older paints?

What benefit was there to have lead in paint?

Answer:

They used it as a pigment. Lead was also added to paint to speed drying, increase durability, retain a fresh appearance, and resist moisture that causes corrosion
Lead white, sometimes called flake white is fast drying and non yellowing and some artists still use it. I recently read that the well-known British portrait and figure artist Lucien Freud does.
