Question:

Why would a cruise control melt itself on a 1996 Dodge Avenger?

I have a 1996 Dodge Avenger 2.0L 4 cyl, 5 speed. Recently I was driving and I noticed the engine heat was way up, pulled over and the cruise control cable was melted. We replaced the thermostat, radiator hose, and the cruise cable. We started it back up today and the heat was only at about halfway, but the cruise cable was really hot and melting once again. We shut the engine off and moved the cable around, it started sparking. The cable seems to be getting fried by something electrical. The cruise control was not operatable before, but recently the buzzer for when the door is opened or lights are left on, doesn't sound like its suppose to. It seems to be something electrical, but what could be causing the cruise cable to melt like that? Thanks for your help

Answer:

you have an electrical short in the cruise control module
